On 20 June, 11 July and 2 August, the Summer Organ Festival will take place at the Church of Saints Eusebio and Vittore in Peglio.
The initiative features three concerts designed to combine the appreciation of ancient musical heritage with the exploration of the local area.The festival is a tribute to Costanzo Antegnati (1546–1624), a prominent figure in the history of the Renaissance organ.
Programme:
- Saturday, 20 June, at 5 p.m.: Mattia Calderazzo (organ) - Mattia Calderazzo, organist and pianist born in Como in 1988, active between Italy and Switzerland. With an extensive repertoire and a long career in both concert and liturgical settings, he was the artistic director of the festival “Parole d’organo.”
- Saturday, 11 July, at 5 p.m.: Matthias Blumer (organ) - Matthias Blumer, honorary citizen of Peglio, retired church musician and teacher from Romanshorn, a town on the southern shore of Lake Constance;
- Saturday, 2 August, at 4 p.m.: Jacob Lawrence (tenor), Elam Rotem (harpsichord) and Ori Harmelin (lute) - Jacob Lawrrence: The Australian tenor specialises in the repertoire ranging from the Renaissance to the Classical period. After studying at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, he moved to Basel in 2016 to further his studies with Gerd Türk at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. A graduate of the Le Jardin des Voix programme run by Les Arts Florissants, he has performed at major European theatres and festivals, including the Philharmonie de Paris, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and the Teatro Real in Madrid. He regularly collaborates with ensembles such as Les Arts Florissants, Vox Luminis, Ensemble Correspondances and Profeti della Quinta. He is particularly highly regarded for his expertise in 16th- and 17th-century performance practice. - Elam Rotem: Harpsichordist, composer and singer. He is the founder and director of the ensemble Profeti della Quinta. He specialised in historical performance practice at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, obtaining a Master’s degree in basso continuo and a second Master’s degree in improvisation and composition. In 2014, he founded the award-winning music education website Early Music Sources. In 2016, he was awarded a PhD with distinction as part of an innovative joint programme between the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and the University of Würzburg, with a thesis entitled Early Basso Continuo Practice: Implicit Evidence in the Music of Emilio de’ Cavalieri. - Ori Harmelin: Born in 1981 in Haifa, Israel, he is a lutenist specialising in early music. He studied at the Institute for Early Music in Trossingen with Rolf Lislevand and Kees Boeke, before going on to further his studies at the Zurich University of the Arts under the guidance of Eduardo Egüez. He was a co-founder of the ensemble Santenay (2004–2017) and is the principal lutenist of the ensembles Profeti della Quinta and Voces Suaves. He has appeared on numerous recordings with various groups; in 2021 he released his first solo album, NESHIMA. He performs regularly in Europe, North America and Asia. Alongside his musical activities, he is a Gestalt therapist and hosts the podcast The Curious Case of Freedom. He lives in Basel.
