A very scenic but challenging circular route around the Sasso di Musso, the imposing rocky outcrop between Musso and Dongo.
Start from the lakeside in Musso and head up Via Gian Giacomo Medici, then turn right into Via al Castello. The asphalt road winds steeply uphill through the hamlets of Musso. Follow the signs first for Croda and then for Monti di Labbio. The road gradually becomes a mix of dirt and concrete but remains rideable up to Monti di Labbio. From here, a trail leads in about 10 minutes to Bocchetta di San Bernardo (1105 m), where you’ll need to push your bike for most of the way. At the top, the Church of San Bernardo awaits, offering truly breathtaking views of the landscape.
The descent leads you into the wild and rugged Albano Valley, on the opposite slope, characterised by steep meadows, wooded slopes and small hollows. From the church, follow the signs for Sentiero 4 della Via dei Monti Lariani. After a long single-track traverse, you will arrive at the hamlet of Piazze (800 m), where a dirt track descends to a bridge over the Albano stream. After crossing the bridge, climb up to Catasco and then follow the asphalt road downhill to Dongo. Cross the Ponte della Regina to reach the site of the historic ironworks. Keeping to the right, continue through the village, passing the Church of San Maria in Martinico, until you arrive at the lakeside promenade of Dongo. Turn right onto the Statale Regina, cross it carefully, and follow the road back toward Musso until you reach the lakeside promenade.
