The route leads to the summit of Monte Legnoncino, offering breathtaking views along the way as it passes the Rifugio Roccoli Lorla. This circular route can be travelled in either direction: clockwise or anticlockwise.
From Dervio, follow the SP67 road towards Valvarrone. Along the way, you’ll pass the hamlet of Castello, a charming cluster of houses dominated by the tower of the Orezia Castle, and the village of Vestreno (587 metres). After around 6 km, turn left at the junction for Sueglio, where signs will lead you to the Rifugio Roccoli Lorla.
To shorten the elevation gain on this challenging route, you can drive to this junction and begin the climb from there—this point will also be passed again on your return.
Continue past the village of Sueglio (775 metres), keeping it on your left. For approximately 4 km, the asphalt road ascends with a steady incline of 7% to 10%.
After about 1 km from the rural hamlet of Loco Toco (926 m), a wide dirt road branches off to the left at a hairpin bend, follow it for 2 km until it rejoins the asphalt road leading to the destination (at the corner of the Ristorante Capriolo, 1108 m).
The climb continues for another 3 km on a very steep asphalt road, passing through the village of Lavadée (1306 m) and reaching the foot of the Rifugio Roccoli Lorla at 1468 metres. From the final bend before the car park, a wide dirt track begins on the left in a small hollow that also features a small lake. Though technically easy, it features sustained gradients of 10-12% and winds through a dense larch forest, offering shade for most of the day. The rideable section ends at the small Church of San Sfirio (1700 m), where you can leave your bike and continue on foot. In just a few minutes, you will reach the summit of Monte Legnoncino (1714 metres), which will reward you with a spectacular 360° panoramic view of the lake and surrounding mountains. From the summit, the view stretches across the first ridges of the Valtellina and Valchiavenna valleys, Lake Mezzola, and the Pian di Spagna wetland with the mouth of the Adda River. You can also spot the small Lake Piona and a large portion of Lake Como. On a clear day, the distant silhouette of Monte Rosa can even be seen on the horizon.
The return trip follows the same route as the ascent until you reach the junction near the Ristorante Capriolo. Here, we recommend a scenic variant: take the left-hand asphalt road that leads through the village of Tremenico before rejoining the SP67. From there, you’ll pass the Sueglio junction again (this time on your right) and continue downhill back to Dervio.
