Art in Crypt - Gravedona ed Uniti

From 24 May to mid-January 2026 the Crypt of St. Antonio (beneath the Parish Church of St. Vincenzo) in Gravedona ed Uniti hosts the Exhibition "Art in Crypt", with the sculptures of the local artist Elvino Motti

“The light of the glorious Risen Christ dissolves the darkness of heart and spirit.” With these words from the Liturgy, a great candle is lit in the Easter night. Light and shadow: symbols of life and creation, standing against the forces of chaos and death. Since the beginning of time, humanity has stared in amazement at the eternal dance of day and night, slowly learning to move through the darkness by holding light in its hands.
Beneath the Pleban Church of St. Vincenzo in Gravedona, the ancient crypt of St. Antonio Abate whispers a story stretching back two millennia: underfoot, a Roman floor; all around, a forest of columns mismatched in style yet harmonious raised in the eleventh century. Though significantly altered in the seventeenth century, the crypt still breathes with the sacred hush it once held, once dimly lit by rare monophora, it offered warmth and a place of prayer to the faithful during the colder months.
In the quiet of this hallowed space, Elvino Motti’s installation offers flickers of light, reaching out to the carved Romanesque capitals and the  frescoes of the fourteenth century. How could they not respond? For in the language of scripture, light is the first word ever spoken: and Christ, the Lumen Gentium, the light of the people. Framed in stone, as though at the very edge of the tomb, an angel of light greets us reminding us of the Resurrection. Around us, great spheres swell with the energy of new life; rays stream like heavenly fire. And the sun, at last, rises unfolding the morning of Easter in all its glory" - Don Francesco Marinoni
