Rusico and Fontanedo

Rusico and Fontanedo

Colico 500-1000 m up to 5 Km 1-2 hours

An easy circular route, starting from Acqua la Fevra to the mountains of Rusico - a pretty plateau characterized by the presence of numerous chalets. Descending then to the village of Fontanedo, passing by the church of St. Helena and finally reaching the imposing medieval tower that dominates the plain of Colico.

Travelling by car from Colico go uphill to the village of Villatico; up past the church continue uphill for about 1.5 km until you reach the location Acqua la Fevra (456 m) where you can park your vehicle.
From the intersection follow the paved road (indication CAI 1B Fontanedo / Alpe Scoggione / Monte Legnone), across the bridge over the Inganna stream, following the concrete track and ignoring the directions/signs for the towers. Once you have arrived in front of the sign indicating Fontanedo (599 m), turn left, passing next to the church of St. Helena, and continue for about 1.5 km on the concrete road that leads to Mount Rusico (743 m). Here you can indulge in a visit to the plateau and drink of fresh mountain water from the fountain. From the trail sign pole, leave the road and follow the path to the right towards CAI 1B Fontanedo / Acqua la Fevra / Colico. The steep descent ends at a crossroads, facing right, returning you to the church of St. Helena completing the first circuit. This is a great spot for a break - near the church or to visit the nearby central village of Fontanedo - one of the oldest settlements of Colico, inhabited permanently until the beginning of ‘900.
From here, the path continues downhill on the paved road for a few meters then towards the right, along the trail marked CAI - Anello di Fontanedo indicating the Fontanedo circuit. Passing a stream and, keeping to the right at a crossroads, in about 500 meters you come to the Tower of Fontanedo (540 m). Turning left you can choose to either visit the medieval center dominated by the imposing tower, or to continue on the circuit down a mule track becoming a concrete road shortly after taking a left towards Robustello. From here you pass an old ‘Osteria’, arriving at an asphalted road. Turn left and cross the Inganna torrent to return to the starting point.
The church of St. Helena is only open on the Sunday following ‘Ferragosto’ – traditional Public Holiday celebrated on 15th August.
