Passo San Jorio from Brenzeglio

Passo San Jorio from Brenzeglio

Dongo | Garzeno over 1000 m over 10 Km 2-4 hours

How to get there
To get to the Sanctuary of Quang by car: take the SS340 Regina state road to Dongo, at the roundabout take the SP5 provincial road that leads to Stazzona, Germasino and Garzeno. Once in Garzeno, at the first hairpin bend, continue straight along Via San Jorio until you reach an intersection. Take the road on the right following the signs for the Sanctuary of Quang and Brenzeglio. Continue along the narrow but asphalted road to the sanctuary and park your car.

Already operating since Roman times, the Passo San Jorio (2,014 m a.s.l.) connects the Alto Lario to the Swiss Val Mesolcina. The road leading to the pass was an important communication route in past centuries, where goods in transit to Continental Europe and vice versa passed. The hike leads through the unspoilt Albano Valley, a unique area of biodiversity.

Route
From the sanctuary, continue along the carriage road that, with a gentle slope, leads to Brenzeglio through a chestnut grove. At the beginning of the village, there is a fountain and an intersection indicating the path to the Rifugio Il Giovo and the Rifugio San Jorio on the right. Follow the signs for the two refuges and enter the wood along a dirt track, where you will come across some typical rural buildings of the Albano Valley, called "Masun".
Continue the ascent on the grassy slopes of Monte Cortafon, on the right side of Valle Dongana, until you reach the Monti di Ciaccio (1020 m) and then the houses of Piazza Cavada (1175 m). From here, the route becomes steeper and after numerous sharp bends you arrive at the Dosso di Brento (1435 m). At the top, on a slight hill, you can find the Alpe di Brento (1461 m), where there is a shepherd’s hut.
After crossing the mountain pasture, go up the path that slopes upwards to the saddle of Motto di Paraone, between the two Valleys of San Jorio and Albano, where the Rifugio Il Giovo  (1714 m, closed) is located.
Leaving the refuge, take the dirt road that comes from Bocchetta di Germasino and continue until you reach a crossroads. Take the road on the right and follow the signs for the Rifugio San Jorio . The road alternates between dirt and paved stretches and gentle slopes; along the way you will see some panels with information on the Valle Albano Park.
After crossing a few streams and a couple of final bends, in about 50 minutes from the Rifugio Il Giovo  you arrive at the Rifugio San Jorio(1980 m), former barracks of the Italian Finance Police. Leave the refuge on the left and continue along the steep dirt path that leads, after a few steps, to the Passo San Jorio. From the pass you can enjoy an amazing panorama that spans from the Alto Lario to Valtellina, Lake Maggiore, Swiss Alps, Monte Rosa and the Matterhorn.
Not far from the pass is the small Church of San Jorio (2040 m), dedicated to the hermit monk.
Go back the same way you came up.
